Patriots' Robert Kraft Sounds Off on Bill Belichick's Hall of Fame Snub Amid Criticism of Decision

Joseph ZuckerJan 28, 2026

Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick "unequivocally deserves to be a unanimous first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer" in the words of team owner Robert Kraft.

In a statement to the Associated Press' Rob Maaddi, Kraft called Belichick the "greatest coach of all time."

"Whatever perceptions may exist about any personal differences between Bill and me, I strongly believe Bill Belichick's record and body of work speak for themselves," he said. "As head coach of the New England Patriots for more than two decades, he set the standard for on-field excellence, preparation, and sustained success in the free agency and salary cap era of the National Football League."

Pretty much everyone was shocked to learn Tuesday that Belichick's six Super Bowl titles in New England and two championships as an assistant with the New York Giants weren't enough to get him into the Hall of Fame.

"Holy f---! ... I'm very, very surprised," legendary football writer Peter King said to ESPN's Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham. "A lot of things happen in that room that are unexpected. And of course this is a big surprise to me."

It's hard to see what justification there is for shutting Belichick out of a spot in Canton, Ohio. He has the third-most regular-season wins (302) in NFL history, and Kraft noted how the Patriots' success came at a time when it was tough to maintain a dynasty.

The multiple scandals that unfolded in New England didn't help Belichick's HOF case, but none was on its own serious enough to sully his overall legacy.

And while his frayed relationship with Kraft hindered his chances of getting another job in the NFL, the Hall of Fame voting process isn't one in which Kraft exerts a lot of direct influence.

The Athletic's Mike Sando posited the explanation for Belichick's snub could be relatively innocuous:

Belichick was one of five finalists in his HOF category, and voters could choose three candidates at most. Some may have bypassed the legendary coach thinking he was a shoo-in already, and they wanted to help a different finalist who's on the bubble.

Sando argued he "would see this as a repudiation of the new voting rules implemented for 2025, not of Belichick or any candidate not making it."

Belichick is going to be a Hall of Famer sooner or later. One silver lining to his omission this year is that it shifts the focus away from all the drama surrounding his post-Patriots period and makes people point out he was a great NFL coach, full stop.
