Adam WellsAug 31, 2015

Jameis Winston won't be sidelined for the season opener despite dealing with a sprained ankle suffered during preseason action.

Scott Smith of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers confirmed Winston was active for the matchup against the Tennessee Titans.

Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter revealed Winston's ailment on Aug. 31, via Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune.

"Pain is temporary," Winston said when asked about the injury on Aug. 31, via Merissa Lynn of Fox 13. Winston added it was the "least of his worries," per Cummings, adding he played on a sore ankle at Florida State last season as well.

Winston was taken with the first overall pick in the 2015 draft, immediately making him the face of the franchise. The 2013 Heisman winner was durable in two years at Florida State, starting all 27 games he appeared in and losing just once.

The silver lining is Tampa Bay isn't left on an island. Mike Glennon started 18 games in his first two seasons, throwing 29 touchdowns and completing 58.8 percent of his passes.

The Buccaneers have put everything into Winston, naming him the starting quarterback before the team's first practice session and will hope he can outshine Marcus Mariota, who the Titans picked after Winston.
