Padres' Ian Kennedy Watches Child's Birth on FaceTime, Pitches 2 Hours Later
“It was just a really crazy day,” San Diego Padres starter Ian Kennedy said in what is the understatement of the year.
Let’s start from the beginning.
The righty was expected to miss Friday’s start against the Miami Marlins because his wife, Allison, was in labor with their fourth child.

Poor weather delayed Kennedy’s flight back to California, so after an hour-and-a-half of waiting, he called Padres pitching coach Darren Balsley and asked if he could still pitch.
He wound up taking the bump but not before watching the birth of his new baby girl two hours before game time.
“It's just an emotional moment when I think about it now,” Kennedy said. “I'm just proud of her and Alli because it was so cool to see.”
The 30-year-old allowed just a pair of runs, as he chucked seven innings in an eventual 8-3 Padres win. Kennedy surrendered a home run in the first inning but eventually settled down—thanks to the newest member of his family.
“[Giving] up the homer kind of helped shake it up a little bit,” Kennedy said. “I'm out here on a big league mound, and you've got to step it up. ... What are you going to tell your daughter after you're all done?”
He plans to rejoin the Padres next week.
"After I was done, all of the emotions just came out, and I started crying on the bench because I get to go home to see her, and I just want to hold her,'" Kennedy said.
