Matthew Stafford and McVay React to Retirement Talk, 'What the Hell Kind of Question Is That?'
The Los Angeles Rams will certainly welcome back Matthew Stafford with open arms if the veteran quarterback wants to continue his NFL career.
"Yeah," head coach Sean McVay told reporters when asked if he expects Stafford to be back next season. "If he still wants to play. What the hell kind of question is that? ... You have to ask him. We've been totally present. I know that if he wants to, he's still playing at a pretty damn good clip. I mean, he's the MVP of the league and if he's not... I mean, I've got respect for everybody else but this guy played at a level that's just different."
Stafford was also asked by reporters how he'd evaluate his 2025 season and whether he would be back next season. He didn't seem to appreciate either inquiry.
"I can't generalize six months of my life 10 minutes after a loss," he responded. "Appreciate the guys in this locker room a whole hell of a lot. Everybody who helped me and helped our team be as successful as we were this year. And that's all I'll answer for you."
The Rams finished the season 1-2 against the Seahawks, though the margin of defeat was four total points in the two losses.
The 37-year-old Stafford should win his first MVP award after throwing for 4,707 yards, 46 touchdowns and eight interceptions this season, completing 65 percent of his passes while leading the Rams to a 12-5 record. He was just as good in the playoffs, throwing for six touchdowns and an interception.
Sunday's loss certainly wasn't on Stafford. There's little doubt he has more in the tank if he wants to continue playing.
