Nix underwent ankle surgery Tuesday after suffering a season-ending injury in last Saturday's divisional round win over the Buffalo Bills.
Jarrett Stidham is slated to start in his place when the Broncos kick off against the visiting New England Patriots on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton told reporters Wednesday that Nix's "surgery went well."
Nix wrote in a Wednesday Instagram post learning his injury would require season-ending surgery was "some of the most devastating football news I've ever received."
Wattenberg was placed on injured reserve with a left shoulder injury just ahead of the Broncos' Christmas Day matchup on Dec. 25.
Alex Forsyth started the final two games of the Broncos' regular season, as well as last weekend's overtime win over the Bills, in his absence.
Wattenberg will now be expected to slot back into the starting lineup after rejoining practice as a full participant this week. He had played every defensive snap through the Broncos' first 15 games of the season before his stint on IR.
The Broncos also activated practice squad wide receivers Michael Bandy and Elijah Moore to the active roster.
Denver lost two wide receivers to injury during Saturday's divisional round matchup in Troy Franklin (hamstring) and Pat Bryant (concussion).
Both receivers rejoined practice this week. Bryant worked as a full participant and did not have an injury designation by the end of the week, although Franklin was still listed as questionable after limited participation in Friday's practice.
The Broncos will hope to have Franklin, who ranked second on the Broncos with 709 receiving yards in 17 games this regular season, healthy in time to provide another target in Stidham's playoff debut.
