Australian Open 2026 Results, Winners, Losers and Highlights from Friday's Bracket
One of the major themes of the 2026 Australian Open has been how well the top players have performed.
That theme rang true once again on Friday, as Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff all booked their places in the fourth round.
Alcaraz and Zverev feel destined to meet in the semifinals. Both players produced some impressive tennis over three rounds.
The same thing is brewing on the women's side with Sabalenka and Gauff, who will square off in the semifinals if chalk holds.
Sabalenka was forced to two tiebreaks and Gauff lost a set on Friday, but when they were at their best, they outclassed their respective opponents.
Women's Singles
1 of 2
No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka def. Anastasia Potapova, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (7)
No. 3 Coco Gauff def. Hailey Baptiste, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3
No. 29 Iva Jovic def. No. 7 Jasmine Paolini, 6-2, 7-6 (3)
No. 8 Mirra Andreeva def. Elena-Gabriela Ruse, 6-3, 6-4
No. 12 Elina Svitolina def. No. 23 Diana Shnaider, 7-6 (4), 6-3
No. 17 Victoria Mboko def. No. 14 Clara Tauson, 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-3
No. 19 Karolina Muchova def. Magda Linette, 6-1, 6-1
Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff weren't as clean as they were in the first two rounds on Friday, but they still found ways to win.
Sabalenka battled through a pair of tiebreaks to knock out Anastasia Potapova in straight sets.
Gauff dropped the first set to fellow American Hailey Baptiste. She recovered with a pair of resounding set victories.
Gauff has the tougher path of the two to a semifinal duel. No. 8 seed Mirra Andreeva likely stands in the American's way in the quarterfinal.
Andreeva is the No. 8 seed, but she is the true dark horse to win the Australian Open because of how dominant the top seeds have looked across the women's draw.
Sabalenka faces Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko in the fourth round. That will be Mboko's first-ever fourth-round match at a major.
American teenager Iva Jovic will also play in her first fourth-round match in a major in the other portion of Sabalenka's quarter. Jovic beat No. 7 seed Jasmine Paolini in straight sets on Friday.
Men's Singles
2 of 2
No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz def. No. 32 Corentin Moutet, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1
No. 3 Alexander Zverev def. No. 26 Cameron Norrie, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1
No. 6 Alex De Minaur def. No. 29 Frances Tiafoe, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5
No. 10 Alexander Bublik def. Tomas Etcheverry, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5), 6-4
No. 11 Daniil Medvedev def. Fabian Maroszan, 6-7 (5), 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, 6-3
No. 18 Francisco Cerundolo def. No. 13 Andrey Rublev, 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3
No. 19 Tommy Paul def. No. 14 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, 6-1, 6-1 (retired)
No. 25 Learner Tien def. Nuno Borges, 7-6 (9), 6-4, 6-2
Carlos Alcaraz certainly doesn't look like a player that's never made it past the quarterfinals in Australia.
The No. 1 seed picked up his third consecutive straight-set win on Friday. He did so with ease against No. 32 seed Corentin Moutet. Alcaraz lost just seven games across the three sets.
Next up for Alcaraz is 19th-seeded American Tommy Paul, who hasn't lost a set yet in Melbourne.
Alcaraz poses a totally different threat than Paul's previous three opponents, but he at least has form and confidence on his side for the fourth-round matchup.
Paul and Learner Tien are the Americans left in the top half of the men's singles bracket. Frances Tiafoe was unable to join them due to a loss to No. 6 seed Alex De Minaur.
De Minaur is the lone hope for an Australian to win the home major. He needs one more win to land a quarterfinal bout with Alcaraz.
Alexander Zverev looks like the player who will face the Alcaraz-De Minaur winner in the semifinal.
However, we are one round away from a matchup between Zverev and Daniil Medvedev that would pit two of the best men's hard court players against each other.
