NFL Announces Super Bowl 60 Officiating Crew, Head Referee Ahead of Conference Title Games

Joseph ZuckerJan 20, 2026

The NFL announced the officiating crew that will handle Super Bowl LX on Feb. 8.

Referee Shawn Smith is working his first Super Bowl. Umpire Roy Ellison and side judge Eugene Hall are the most tenured, having been on the crew three times before.

Like Smith, line judge Julian Mapp, field judge Jason Ledet and replay official Andrew Lambert are getting their first crack at the NFL's premier showcase.

According to Pro Football Reference, Smith was most recently the referee for the New England Patriots' 28-16 AFC divisional round win over the Houston Texans. The contest had seven combined penalties totaling 80 yards.

In five of the last six years, Smith has whistled for fewer penalties relative to the rest of the league, and he has averaged around 12 flags per game between 2023-25.

That's seemingly good news for fans who want Super Bowl LX to be decided on the field, without the refs having a large influence.

Football Zebras' Cameron Filipe noted how Smith was quick to make an impression on those tasked with handing out officiating assignments. He was on the crew for the Philadelphia Eagles' NFC championship victory over the Minnesota Vikings in January 2018, the first year he was eligible to work that stage of the postseason.

All told, Smith has 10 playoff games under his belt so far.
