NHL Trade Grades for Rasmus Andersson to the Vegas Golden Knights

Adam HermanJan 18, 2026

The Olympic roster freeze, beginning on Feb. 4, will serve as the impetus for a flurry of trade action. A move between the Golden Knights and Calgary Flames kicked things off Sunday night, with a big name coming off the board: Defenseman Rasmus Andersson heads to Vegas.

What is Andersson's fit in Vegas? Did Calgary receive a sufficient package in return for the Swedish defenseman? Let's analyze the move and assign grades to both teams.

Rasmus Andersson, 29, is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, though Vegas has a high success rate in extending players it acquires. See, for instance, Noah Hanifin, who was Andersson's defensive partner in Calgary as recently as two seasons ago.

Andersson is a top-four right-handed defenseman who thrives offensively. He is a heavy shooter from the point and has ten-plus goals in three of the last four seasons; so far, he has ten through 48 games in 2025-26. His secondary abilities are carrying the puck up the ice and setting up teammates for scoring chances.

Andersson loves to play a physical game, but his defensive output doesn't necessarily align with the aesthetic. In truth, he's been a defensive liability in Calgary, though he was forced to play difficult minutes. Vegas has the defensive depth to put him in more appropriate minutes. Likely alongside Noah Hanifin, with whom Andersson thrived in Calgary. Shea Theodore and Brayden McNabb can take on the burden of matching up against top players.

A first- and second-round pick, plus a solid defender with term and a depth prospect, is a hefty price to pay for a pending UFA like Andersson, who is ideally suited for a No. 3 offensive defenseman. There are mitigating factors. First, again, Vegas's propensity to re-sign players like him.

Vegas also had to deal with the realities of the marketplace. There are far more buyers than sellers, and the pool of available defensemen behind Andersson is unimpressive, to say the least. If not them, then a direct competitor in the West, such as Dallas, may have been his landing spot. Maybe it's objectively an overpay, but they don't hand out Stanley Cups for winning trades. If they do indeed re-sign him at a reasonable price, then it probably balances out the cost anyway.

Calgary Flames

Nashville Predators v Calgary Flames

There were numerous reports throughout the year of Calgary attempting to re-sign Rasmus Andersson. It's for the best that they didn't.

That's not necessarily about the player, but rather where they are as an organization. The mass exodus of many key players over the past few seasons necessitates a rebuild, no matter how much they may wish otherwise. It was much more important for them to take advantage of a market that made Andersson's value higher than it ever again will be.

Zach Whitecloud is a sneaky grab for the Flames, who would like to give goaltender Dustin Wolf more help. The 29-year-old is a shutdown defenseman who kills plays in the neutral zone and prevents high-danger chances in the slot. He's had a tough year in Vegas, but Whitecloud has historically been much better than his $2.75 million cap hit would suggest. Signed through 2028, he should be a sound No. 4 defenseman who can mitigate problems for a young team in transition.

There's a legitimate chance the Flames garner two first-round picks out of this, as Vegas is a true Cup contender. Even if not, a first- and second-round pick, plus a solid defenseman with term and a depth prospect in Abram Wiebe, is objectively amazing value for a player of Andersson's caliber, and the return is a much better fit for the Flames' needs and direction as an organization than Andersson is, sentimental attachment aside.
