New Yankees Rumors on Cody Bellinger Reveal Team's Strategy amid $160M Contract Offer

Timothy RappJan 18, 2026

The New York Yankees are drawing a line in the sand with Cody Bellinger.

According to Bob Klapisch of the Newark Star-Ledger, the Yankees "have made an internal decision not to engage in a bidding war for Bellinger if the New York Mets or anyone else swoops in with a blow-away offer," adding that the team believes it's five-year, $160 million offer with a pair of opt-outs is "a fair proposal" and that they are "prepared to let Bellinger walk."

The Yankees have yet to make a major splash this offseason, certainly a concern for a fanbase that expects to be a World Series contender each season. Running it back is one thing if Bellinger is re-signed, but losing his bat in the lineup would be a huge blow for a franchise that fell to the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS.

The 30-year-old Bellinger had a strong season for the Yankees in 2025, hitting .272 with 29 homers, 98 RBI, 89 runs, 13 stolen bases and a .813 OPS in 152 games. He settled into the lineup nicely, largely hitting No. 3 or cleanup while offering protection for Aaron Judge.

Bellinger's impact at the plate and his versatility in the field has made him one of the best targets available in free agency, however, meaning a bidding war could yet unfold. The Mets already splashed the cash to bring aboard Bo Bichette and Devin Williams, among others—while also trading for Marcus Semien—but they have plenty of pop to replace in their lineup after losing star first baseman Pete Alonso.

Teams that missed out on Kyle Tucker and Bichette could also enter the fray.

The Yankees seemingly have a very strong offer on the table for Bellinger, but if a team is willing to increase the years or average annual value on the deal, he might be patrolling a different outfield in 2026.
