Adam WellsJan 18, 2026

Three days after reports of a looming deal between John Harbaugh and the New York Giants emerged, the two sides have finally agreed on a contract and Harbaugh will officially be introduced as the new head coach on Tuesday at 12 p.m. ET.

Harbaugh confirmed his deal in messages to Adam Schefter of ESPN and Ian O'Connor of The Athletic.

Earlier Saturday Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Harbaugh and the Giants have finalized a five-year contract, making it the first official hire of the coaching cycle.

Prior to the agreement, The Athletic added that the plan was to officially introduce Harbaugh at a Tuesday press conference.

In addition to details within the contract, the report noted Harbaugh's camp wanted "total clarity" on who he will report to and his preference is "a situation similar" to what he had with the Baltimore Ravens, reporting directly to owner Steve Bisciotti rather than the general manager.

Dan Duggan of The Athletic noted the Giants have historically had their head coach report directly to the GM, which could explain why the negotiations were so prolonged.

Schefter reported on Wednesday that Harbaugh and the Giants were working to finalize a deal to make him their new head coach.

Harbaugh was expected to get a five-year contract worth around $100 million in total value, per NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

It never seemed likely that Harbaugh and the Giants would not be able finalize the deal. They acted quickly after he was fired by the Ravens to ensure they could hire him. He reportedly canceled a scheduled interview with the Tennessee Titans after news of his agreement with New York came out.

Finalizing the deal for Harbaugh was a major coup for a team that desperately needed a win. They have finished last in the NFC East in each of the past two seasons and have just one winning season since 2017.

Harbaugh went 180-113 with 12 playoff appearances and a victory in Super Bowl 47 in 18 seasons with the Ravens from 2008 to '25.
