Fresh Packers Rumors on Matt LaFleur, Brian Gutekunst Contracts After NFL Playoff Loss to Bears

Adam WellsJan 17, 2026

The Green Bay Packers are making progress in their contract talks with both head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, talks between all parties remain ongoing and the "expectation" is the Packers will get new deals done with LaFleur and Gutekunst.

Schefter cited multiple league sources as saying they "would be surprised" if both men don't finalize contract extensions from the club.

The 2026 season will mark the final year for LaFleur and Gutekunst on their current contracts.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported prior to kickoff of the Packers' playoff game against the Chicago Bears on Jan. 10 that LaFleur was "not going to be judged on these four quarters of football."

The results from those four quarters saw the Packers blow a 15-point lead in the final quarter of a 31-27 loss. Green Bay ended the season with five consecutive losses, including the playoff game.

Schefter reported the day after that game that Packers president Ed Policy had a "significant decision" to make about LaFleur.

Another potential issue delaying an extension is what the Packers' offer looks like. Per a Jan. 15 report from Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, one agent said the holdup is more about "years, not money" being offered.

The exact details of Green Bay's offer are unknown at this point. LaFleur's current salary of $5 million ranks 17th among all NFL head coaches.

Since LaFleur was hired by the Packers in 2019, they have a 76-40-1 record with six playoff appearances in seven years. They have lost six of their nine playoff games and have not made it to the Super Bowl.

Gutekunst has worked in the Packers organization since 1999. He was promoted to general manager in 2018 and has helped build a roster that includes Jordan Love, Micah Parsons, Christian Watson, Josh Jacobs and Tucker Kraft.
