The Story Within SEC Football WEEK TWO

Kevin McGradySep 13, 2009

The South Eastern Conference had a tale to tell in week two. Florida overcame the let down of playing a less talented opponent after the first quarter and breezed to an easy blow out. Alabama played down to another less than adequate opponent. They won in the end easily. These were not the story in week two.

Tennessee was exposed by an average UCLA team this week. This brought attention to the SEC eastern division. Georgia was woefully pitiful in week one against an average Oklahoma State team. Tennessee was less than effective against a middle of the road Pac 10 team. Vanderbilt played well in defeat at LSU. While the Georgia Vs. South Carolina game was entertaining to watch, was the picture put forward by this offensive show truth or fiction? Both of these teams were pitiful on offense week one. Were they this much better in week two, or was this the result of two less than impressive teams that met up? We shall find out in the weeks to come.

LSU was much improved in week two. They improved on defense and offense against a tenacious Vanderbilt team. They are still woefully under performing pre season expectations, but are improving weekly. The Tigers have promise, but will they improve quickly enough to challenge for the division title? They have a week to improve before they face a much improved Mississippi State team.

Mississippi State showed promise in a loss to Auburn this week. They scored more points on a really stingy Auburn defense than they had in the previous decade. The new offense proved to be illusive and difficult to defend. While not out of the SEC cellar yet, there are obvious signs of improvement in this team over all.

Auburn is back! Auburn is back! that deserves to be said two times. This Auburn team shredded a good Mississippi State defense for 49 points and 580 yards of offense. Auburn looked awkward on offense and defense at times and special teams are just plain sub standard. That being said Auburn is back! The Western Division hopefuls better wake up and take notice immediately. This team is still evolving and improving and is setting records every week on offense. The defense looks like it is more than adequate for any other offense in the SEC at this point. Auburn is a real threat for any and all teams in the SEC this year.

The story in the SEC this week is that the Eastern Division is week and Florida will have little competition. The Western Division is a work in process with five teams that could reasonably win out. Alabama is the front runner and there is no doubt a threat for Florida. LSU is improving with a talent base that is unreal. Auburn has the trickiest offense to defend that has been witnessed this year. Arkansas is vastly improved over last season. Ole Miss has yet to show their potential, but it is certainly there.

Do not hand the SEC title to Florida just yet. While there is no competition for them in the Eastern Division so far, the west is full of potential problems for Super Man and his merry band of Gators. This looks to be a strong season for the SEC with bowl potential deeper than at any time since the BCS inception.
