Rangers' Drury Hints at NHL Trade Deadline Sell-Off in Letter to Fans amid Rumors
New York Rangers president and general manager, Chris Drury, said the team will be pursuing a "retool" of the team and won't "stand pat" amid this season's struggles.
He emphasized that "this will not be a rebuild" and that the Rangers would continue to be "built around our core players and prospects" while seeking "players that bring tenacity, skill, speed and a winning pedigree with a focus on obtaining young players, draft picks and cap space to allow us flexibility moving forward."

Mollie Walker of the New York Post reported the Rangers' players were informed the letter would be posted, adding there was "another meeting with just the leadership group" while Artemi Panarin had an individual meeting with Drury.
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Panarin, who has a no-move clause, "was informed that he will not be offered a contract extension, and that Drury was prepared to work with him and agent Paul Theofanous to trade the winger anywhere he wishes to go."
The Rangers have stumbled to an Eastern Conference-worst 20-22-6 record this season, managing just 46 points. Only the Chicago Blackhawks (45 points), St. Louis Blues (44 points), Calgary Flames (44 points), Winnipeg Jets (43 points) and Vancouver Canucks (37 points) have been worse.
And there haven't been many signs of improvement. The Rangers have lost five straight and are 1-6-2 in their last nine.
Suffice to say, expectations are far higher in New York. But the team has trended in the wrong direction for two seasons now. Last year, the team missed the playoffs, a major disappointment for a squad that reached the Eastern Conference Finals in 2022 and 2024.
And there will be doubts about whether Drury can pull off the retooling project he's proposing.
As The Athletic's Shayna Goldman wrote, "The problem is, the team doesn't have a strong track record of drafting well, and maybe even more importantly, developing players into difference-makers—Kaapo Kakko, Brennan Othmann and Alexis Lafrenière are prime examples of that. Management hasn't been creative enough to spot hidden gems or reclamation projects, either. So the question is whether this front office can be trusted to fully buy into this process and turn things around [to contend again in 2026-27]."
Team owner James Dolan has publicly backed Drury, but Rangers fans have changed "Fire Drury" over the past week.
In that regard, Friday's announcement and the effort to retool the roster may be Drury's last gasp at saving his job.
