Heisman finalist makes history after going undrafted
Denver famously didn't pick John Elway in the 1983 NFL draft. The Baltimore Colts took him first overall that year despite his open refusal to play for them, and he was eventually rerouted to the Mile High City.
Before that, Craig Morton was the starting quarterback when the Broncos went to the Super Bowl in 1977 and then returned to the playoffs the next two seasons.
The franchise's post-Elway era has been littered with bad draft picks and veteran additions who delivered some success for a few years. Peyton Manning is the most obvious example of the latter, though his worst season in Denver was coincidentally when the team won a third Super Bowl.
There's a layer of irony to Tebow being the outlier when the 2011 season was the only year in which he got an extended look as an NFL starter. And the Broncos were so unconvinced by his performance they turned around and signed Manning the following offseason.
Like last year, the playoffs will serve as another litmus test for Nix.
In a 31-7 loss to the Bills, he finished 13-of-22 for 144 yards and a touchdown. One bad postseason showing is easy to write off, especially for a rookie.
Should Nix have a similar showing Saturday, more fans might begin to question whether he's unquestionably the long-term solution under center. And Tebow will continue to stand alone.
