Greg Roman Fired as Chargers OC, Who Are Top Replacements Under Jim Harbaugh?

Timothy RappJan 13, 2026

The Los Angeles Chargers fired both offensive coordinator Greg Roman and offensive line coach Mike Devlin on Tuesday.

The news was first reported by Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Given that the Chargers won 11 games this past season, reached the postseason and have Justin Herbert at quarterback, their OC vacancy will be one of the more appealing ones on the market, though the Detroit Lions and potentially the Philadelphia Eagles will also have high-profile openings.

If Mike McDaniel doesn't take a head-coaching gig this offseason, he'll be the top name in just about every offensive coordinator search. Pairing his scheme with Justin Herbert would be a huge upgrade over Tua Tagovailoa running it in Miami, though the playmakers in both Detroit and Philly may ultimately make them more appealing options for McDaniel if he goes the OC route.

Todd Monken will be another name likely linked to the Chargers if he doesn't follow John Harbaugh to his next head-coaching gig (or get hired as a head coach himself). Monken and Jim Harbaugh haven't intersected, but his ability to blend a strong running game with explosive passing plays down the field during his time in Baltimore would fit the physical, trenches-first philosophy Harbaugh believes in while allowing Herbert to make plays.

Kliff Kingsbury could be a possibility, though whether his no-huddle style would jell with Harbaugh is debatable. A former offensive-minded head coach like Brian Daboll could be another possibility.

If the Chargers promote from within, passing-game coordinator Marcus Brady has experience in the role (2021-22 with the Indianapolis Colts) and would be one possibility. Quarterbacks coach Shane Day would be another, though he's never been an offensive coordinator at the college or pro levels.

As for the job itself, the Chargers have talent on the offensive side of the ball but were beset by injuries this past season, namely to the offensive line.

Still, it became clear that Roman was no longer the right man for the job, necessitating a change.

How the Chargers address the vacancy will now be their biggest storyline of their offseason.
