Matt LaFleur 'Speechless' After Aaron Rodgers Defends Packers HC Amid Hot-Seat Rumors
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers caught his former head coach off-guard with his pointed comments in his post-game press conference after Monday night's playoff loss to the Houston Texans.
Rodgers was asked about the future of Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, and while he spoke glowingly about the veteran leader, he also took some time to defend Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, who is also rumored to be on the hot seat after a disappointing playoff exit.
"I mean, this league has changed a lot in my 21 years," Rodgers said, per The Athletic's Michael Silver. "You know, when you hear conversation about the Mike Tomlins of the world, Matt LaFleurs of the world. Those are just two that I played for. And when I first got in the league, there wouldn't be conversations about whether those guys were on the hot seat, but the way that the league is covered now and the way that there's snap decisions and the validity given to the Twitter experts and all the experts on TV now who you make it seem like they know what the hell they're talking about, to me that's an absolute joke."

Rodgers added: "And for either of those two guys to be on the hot seat is really apropos of where we're at as a society and a league, because obviously Matt's done a lot of great things in Green Bay and we had a lot of success. Mike T.'s had more success than damn near anybody in the league for the last 19, 20 years. And more than that, though, when you have the right guy and the culture's right, you don't think about making a change. But there's a lot of pressure that comes from the outside, and obviously that sways decisions from time to time. But that's not how I would do things and not how the league used to be."
When told about Rodgers' post-game comments, LaFleur admitted that he was touched by the quarterback's defense of his job in Green Bay.
"I'm speechless," LaFleur told Silver via text message. "He didn't have to do that, but he did. (It's) one of the nicest compliments (of) my life. I'm so appreciative of him for that."
LaFleur coached Rodgers for four years before the signal-caller was traded to the New York Jets ahead of the 2023 season. During their time together, Rodgers won two of his four NFL MVP awards in 2020 and 2021, but tensions emerged between them before he departed Green Bay.
The Packers were eliminated in the NFC Wild Card Round for the second straight year with a 31-27 loss to the NFC North rival Chicago Bears on Saturday. Rodgers and the Steelers didn't fare any better, falling 30-6 against the Texans for Pittsburgh's seventh straight playoff loss.
LaFleur and Tomlin have proven to be among the best leaders in the NFL, but as fan bases grow restless over a lack of results, franchises could be influenced to make some changes. However, the Packers and Steelers may want to heed the words of Rodgers, as it will be hard to upgrade from their respective head coaches this offseason.
