Red Sox Exec Reveals Likelihood of Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu Trade amid Outfield Depth

Zach BacharJan 10, 2026

Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow revealed that trades involving outfielders Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu weren't likely to happen during the offseason.

"It was never likely in my mind," Breslow said Saturday, via MassLive's Chris Cotillo. "We've got really talented outfielders. When teams call, that's what other executives point to. They're young, they're controllable, they're dynamic, they're talented and can impact games in multiple ways. It's really nice to be able to say they're also members of the Boston Red Sox."

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic previously reported that the Kansas City Royals were interested in Duran on the trade market, but only if the Red Sox lowered their asking price.

Boston has a crowded outfield heading into the 2026 season, as Duran, Abreu, Roman Anthony and Ceddanne Rafaela are all in line for playing time. Masataka Yoshida and Kristian Campbell could also see some opportunities.

"We talked a lot about our outfield depth, even calling it a surplus at times, coming out of the trade deadline," Breslow said, per Cotillo. "Then, for the month of September, we were without two very, very good players. I've yet to meet the person who says, 'We have too many good players.'"

The Red Sox are coming off a 2025 campaign in which they finished with an 89-73 record, advancing to the postseason for the first time since 2021 before ultimately falling to the New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card Series.
