Latest NFL Rumors on Mike McDaniel's Future as Dolphins HC Amid John Harbaugh Buzz
The Miami Dolphins are reportedly floating a potential change of head coach while interviewing candidates to be the team's next general manager.
The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported Wednesday the Dolphins have been "pushing" during general manager interviews "to hear candidates' thoughts on a new head coach."
Russini noted that "conversations about a Miami future that includes Mike McDaniel" are also taking place.
The Dolphins parted ways with former GM Chris Grier after a 2-7 start to the season, but finished out the campaign with McDaniel still in place.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Monday that McDaniel was expected to return for 2026, even as the franchise reportedly considers moving on from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
There's a chance the Dolphins' choice could be influenced by the Baltimore Ravens' decision to fire longtime head coach John Harbaugh after his team missed the playoffs this winter.
NFL insider Josina Anderson reported Wednesday the Dolphins "have been in touch on" Harbaugh since his dismissal.
The competition will likely be steep to hire Harbaugh, who hits the market having accumulated a .614 regular-season win percentage to go along with his Super Bowl XLVII win from 2013.
There are six open head coaching jobs outside of Baltimore, and ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Harbaugh's agent Bryan Harlan received calls from seven teams shortly after his client's firing.
McDaniel told reporters Monday he expects to be involved in the search for a new general manager, and that his "understanding is that I'm the coach of the Miami Dolphins until told otherwise."
The Dolphins coach is currently signed through 2028 after accumulating a 35-33 overall record through four games.
Miami made the playoffs in the first two seasons under McDaniel's tenure, but did not win a postseason game. The team has fallen short of the last two postseasons amid injury issues and inconsistency from Tagovailoa.
