Bo Bichette, Alex Bregman Rumors Reveal Red Sox, Cubs Among Potential Landing Spots

Julia StumbaughJan 7, 2026

The Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs reportedly both remain in the running for free agent sluggers Bo Bichette and Alex Bregman.

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon reported Wednesday the Red Sox and Cubs "are among the teams talking to both players, according to people briefed on the conversations."

Rosenthal and Sammon added that the Toronto Blue Jays have also spoken to both Bichette and Bregman, but now seem focused on Kyle Tucker.

Bregman slashed .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs and 62 RBI as the Cubs' third baseman last season.

Bichette, a career shortstop who MLB.com's Mark Feinsand has reported is willing to move to second base, posted a .311/.357/.483 slash line with 18 home runs and 94 RBI in his seventh season with the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays also recently signed Japanese third baseman Kazuma Okamoto, seemingly making Bregman less of an obvious fit in their free agency plans.

The Cubs are interested in both free agents because of a "desire to upgrade at third base," according to Rosenthal and Sammon.

Chicago is currently heading into the 2026 season with Nico Hoerner at second base and Matt Shaw at third.

Either bringing in Bregman to play third base or putting Bichette on second would open up the possibilities of trading Hoerner or making Shaw a utility player, Rosenthal and Sammon noted.

The Red Sox are looking to bring Bregman back after he both produced and served as a leader on a young team during his first season in Boston.

Should the Red Sox re-sign Bregman, Marcelo Mayer could play at second base while. Bringing in Bichette would alternately allow Mayer to slide over to third, as noted by Feinsand.

ESPN's Buster Olney and Jesse Rogers recently reported the Red Sox "have signaled a willingness" to pay Bregman money in the range of six years and $171.5 million.

The Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks have also been tied to Bregman, while Bichette has been connected to the Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Bregman and Bichette aren't the only top free free agents still available on the market. Tucker and Cody Bellinger join starting pitchers Framber Valdez and Ranger Suárez as high-profile players who remain unsigned as of the first week of January.

Clubs have just about a month and a half left to figure out their batting lineups before spring training begins this February.
