Australian Open's Historic Prize Money Pool Announced Ahead of 2026 Grand Slam

Mike ChiariJan 6, 2026

The upcoming 2026 Australian Open's prize money pool will see a 16 percent increase compared to the 2025 event.

According to Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic, the total purse for the 2026 Australian Open is $75 million USD, which equates to $111.5 million AUD. The prize pool is roughly 16 percent of the $465.8 million USD in revenue that Tennis Australia reported last year.

The 2026 Australian Open prize pool surpasses the $72.6 million that was up for grabs at Wimbledon last year, but it still lags behind the 2025 U.S. Open prize pool, which was a Grand Slam record $85 million.

At the 2026 Australian Open, the winners of the men's and women's singles tournaments will take home $2.8 million each, and those who are eliminated in the first round will secure $100,761 each.

The winner's purse is 19 percent higher than last year's Australian Open, and the prize for first-round losers is going up by 14 percent.

Italy's Jannik Sinner and Madison Keys of the United States were the Australian Open singles champions last year, and they will look to defend their titles when the 2026 Aussie Open kicks off on Jan. 18.

Sinner, who is the No. 2 men's player in the world, has won back-to-back Australian Opens, and he is also the 2024 U.S. Open and 2025 Wimbledon champ.

His biggest competition figures to be world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, who is an Aussie Open title away from securing the career Grand Slam.

When the 30-year-old Keys won the Australian Open last year, it was considered a big surprise, as it marked her first Grand Slam singles title. The world No. 7 will likely be in the mix once again, but she is far from a slam dunk to repeat.

Women's tennis is as competitive and wide open as ever with Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Świątek, Amanda Anisimova, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula being just a few of the potential contenders in Melbourne.
