'Smfh,' Lamar Jackson Reacts to Photo of No-Call on Steelers on Ravens' Missed FG
Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson rued what may have been a missed penalty call on Tyler Loop's wayward field-goal attempt as time expired in Sunday night's 26-24 defeat.
Pittsburgh Steelers special teams standout Ben Skowronek had his right hand on teammate Cam Heyward as he elevated and tried to block the field goal.
"Smfh," Jackson wrote on social media in response to a still image of the play:
Loop's 44-yard effort sailed wide right, handing the Steelers the AFC North title and the conference's final playoff berth. If the officials had flagged Skowronek for leverage, it would've resulted in a 15-yard penalty and afforded Loop a much closer second chance to win the game.
Leverage falls under the "unsportsmanlike conduct" designation within the NFL's rulebook.
Defensive players are prohibited from "jumping or standing on a teammate or opponent to block or attempt to block an opponent's kick or apparent kick." They're also refrained from "placing a hand or hands on a teammate or opponent to gain additional height."
It looked as though Skowronek was guilty of the latter.
Loop had been perfect on field goals inside 50 yards prior to Sunday. The odds of him missing two in a row were slim.
From that standpoint, Jackson and his teammates will have reason to be frustrated with the outcome.
But a game is never decided on one officiating decision alone.
Baltimore's inability to get a stop on defense played a much bigger role. Three of the Steelers' five possessions in the second half ended in a touchdown.
Head coach John Harbaugh didn't do Loop any favors, either, when he had Jackson kneel on 1st-and-10 from Pittsburgh's 24-yard line. Giving the ball to running back Derrick Henry may have gotten the offense a few yards closer to the end zone.
In a way, the missed field goal and everything surrounding it was the perfect capper for such a disjointed season in Baltimore.
