Taylyn Hadley Jan 4, 2026

Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears dropped their regular-season finale 19-16 at home to Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

Detroit entered the matchup eliminated from playoff contention, while Chicago was battling the Philadelphia Eagles for the No. 2 seed in the NFC.

Despite the loss, the Bears' postseason positioning was decided when the Washington Commanders defeated Philadelphia, securing Chicago the No. 2 seed and dropping the Eagles to No. 3.

Williams finished with 212 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception while completing 20-of-22 passes. He connected with Colston Loveland and Jahdae Walker for scores.

Goff threw for 331 yards with one touchdown and one interception, completing 27-of-42 passes as Detroit closed the season at 9-8.

Fans debated whether the Chicago Bears can pull off a deep playoff run following the season-finale loss.

Goff and the Detroit Lions jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and kept the pressure on Chicago Bears in the second, holding them scoreless while adding 10 more points. Detroit nearly extended the margin further, but Jake Bates missed a 53-yard field goal before halftime.

Chicago's struggles continued in the third quarter when Williams threw an interception that set up a Lions field goal, sending Detroit into the fourth quarter with a 16-0 lead.

Williams and the Bears surged in the fourth, scoring two touchdowns and converting two two-point attempts on both drives. Chicago's defense also forced a punt and an interception, but the comeback fell short. After a Bears three-and-out, Detroit drove into field-goal range and converted the game-winner to seal the victory as Chicago fell to 11-6.

While not yet official, the Bears are expected to face the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the playoffs.
