Chiefs' 'Substantial' Roster Overhaul, Potential Staff Changes Discussed in NFL Rumors
The Kansas City Chiefs could be seeing some big changes this offseason as they try to bounce back from a disappointing year that has the team 6-10 entering Week 18.
While head coach Andy Reid is set to return, "substantial" changes could be on the horizon, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero:
"With offensive coordinator Matt Nagy's contract up, several scenarios are in play -- including Nagy getting a head coaching job. He'll be among the top candidates, a rare one this cycle with experience and a background on offense. If he doesn't get a head job, leaving to take over as a primary play-caller elsewhere is also possible.

"In either case, the Chiefs could welcome back former Reid assistants such as Mike Kafka or Eric Bieniemy, both of whom could inject some new ideas from their previous places of employment while retaining some familiarity. In addition, a substantial roster reboot is also afoot, with the team significantly over the cap and coming off a rare disappointing season."
The Chiefs entered this year as winners of three of the past six Super Bowls. Last season's team went 15-2 and reached the Super Bowl but lost 40-22 to the Philadelphia Eagles.
This year has been a disaster. The Chiefs have lost seven of eight games, and two-time NFL MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a season-ending torn ACL on Dec. 14 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
As the NFL Network duo noted, an offensive coordinator change could be forthcoming with Nagy's contract expiring. Nagy is receiving interest as a prospective head coach, per Pelissero, who connected him with the Tennessee Titans.
Jay Glazer of Fox Sports also listed Nagy as a possibility for the New York Giants' job after Big Blue parted ways with Brian Daboll last November.
The biggest problem the Chiefs face is with the salary cap. Per Over the Cap, Kansas City is nearly $53 million over the cap for the 2026 season. They have to do work just to be cap compliant.
General manager Brett Veach could encounter some troubles making significant strides improving the team in free agency. The Chiefs also could be losing 11-time Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce, who is rumored to considered retirement at the end of the season.
The fact that the Chiefs play in the brutally tough AFC West, which features the 13-win Denver Broncos and 11-win Los Angeles Chargers, doesn't help either. Making a comeback in 2026 could be a tougher endeavor when those two stand in their way toward a division title.
Ultimately, the Chiefs have a lot of work to do. In the meantime, they're finishing the season out Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders.
