NFL Rumors on Daniel Jones' Future, Possible Colts Contract After Achilles Injury
Despite suffering a season-ending torn Achilles, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones reportedly is expected to stay put this offseason.
ESPN's Stephen Holder reported that Colts general manager Chris Ballard and head coach Shane Steichen are currently planning "to re-sign Jones in the spring, hoping for a quick recovery with the belief he can be their long-term quarterback solution."
Holder went on to indicate that there's a chance Ballard and Steichen might not be around to see things through, questioning, "Has [Colts CEO Carlie Irsay-Gordon] endorsed that plan, and does that suggest changes aren't likely?"
The Colts were riding high when they started the year tied for the best record in the NFL at 7-2. The team had Super Bowl aspirations and made the all-in move of trading two first-round draft picks to the New York Jets to acquire two-time All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner. Jones was in the midst of a career year in his first year in Indianapolis after winning the starting job over the offseason in a quarterback competition with Anthony Richardson.
Unfortunately, things collapsed in a big way for the Colts after Jones tore his Achilles on Dec. 7. Indianapolis has lost six straight games and now has an 8-8 record, falling short of the playoffs for the sixth straight year.
While Jones has a long road to recovery, his success under Steichen could be enough to warrant a return. He threw for 3,101 yards in 13 games, just 104 yards shy of his career-high, while adding 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
The Colts would be wise to keep Jones in the fold if they hope to return to playoff contention in 2026.
