Manchester United Complete Comeback and Defeat Spurs 3-1

Andrew JordanSep 12, 2009

In the most one of the most intriguing Premier League matches this weekend, Manchester United traveled to White Hart Lane to take on Tottenham Hotspur in a battle between two of the top clubs in the Premier League this season.

The crowd at White Hart Lane was buzzing from before kickoff over this matchup, and Tottenham came out of the gate hard, as just 50 seconds into the game, Jermain Defoe scored an amazing bicycle-kick goal past Ben Foster to give Spurs an early 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately for Tottenham, their goal kick-started Man United, as they went onto the offensive right after the opening goal and the game became filled with many great chances for both clubs.

In the 22nd minute, Wilson Palacios tripped former Spur Dimitar Berbatov from 25 yards away from the goal, causing him to get a yellow card and set up a great chance for United to tie up the game.

And from 25 yards away, Ryan Giggs' shot beat Carlo Cudicini in the top right corner of the net tying up the game.

With the goal, Ryan Giggs has now scored a goal in every season of the Premier League since its inception in 1992, making him the only player to do so.

Afterwards, United got a great chance in the 28th minute to take the lead, but the Spurs defense was able to block all three United shots during this sequence.

But Manchester United never gave up, and in the 41st minute, Anderson scored his first Premier League goal with Manchester United in over two years with the team after capitalizing on a failed clearance by Sebastien Bassong off a Paul Scholes shot, giving Manchester United a 2-1 lead at the half.

After the start of the second half, the play became much slower between both sides, and the game became much slower than the first half.

However, all of this changed in the 58th minute after Paul Scholes got his second caution of the match on a late tackle on Tom Huddlestone, which caused Scholes to get a red card and be sent off, causing United to play with ten men for the rest of the match.

However, Man United played great after Scholes got sent off, and it wasn't apparent afterward that United were down to ten men, as United continued to get shots on Cudicini and were shutting down Tottenham's attack.

And United finally capitalized on Tottenham in the 78th minute, as Wayne Rooney beat two defenders and Cudicini through the legs to give Manchester United a 3-1 lead and all but sealed the match.

After the third goal by United, Tottenham weren't able to munster up another really good chance on goal, and Manchester United came out on top of Tottenham by a final score of 3-1.

With the win, United got an impressive away victory, and once again came from behind to defeat Tottenham, who have not beaten Manchester United since May 19, 2001.
