Alex Bregman Landing Spots, Latest Rumors on Red Sox Free Agent Involving Cubs, More

Julia StumbaughDec 22, 2025

The Boston Red Sox reportedly have at least three competitors in their potential bid to re-sign third baseman Alex Bregman.

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported Monday the Toronto Blue Jays and Arizona Diamondbacks "have both emerged as legitimate suitors for Bregman, according to sources briefed on the discussions."

Rosenthal added: "Other clubs, including the Chicago Cubs, also are said to be involved."

The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey reported earlier Monday that re-signing Bregman "remains a priority" for the Red Sox.

Bregman earned his first All-Star nod since 2019 with the Red Sox last season while slashing .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs and 62 RBI.

He is projected by ESPN's Kiley McDaniel to receive a five-year, $170 million deal, while The Athletic's Tim Britton put him at $171 million over six years.

The Red Sox theoretically have the financial flexibility to provide those kinds of numbers after getting the San Francisco Giants to take on the $271 million left on Rafael Devers' contract following their June trade of the slugger.

MassLive's Chris Cotillo reported earlier this month that the Red Sox are expecting their 2026 payroll to exceed the club's 2024 number of around $249 million.

How much competition the Red Sox face in using that money to sign Bregman could ultimately hinge at least in part on where Bo Bichette ends up this offseason.

Bichette, who tied a career high by batting .311 in 139 games for the Blue Jays last season, has been tied to both his former club and the Red Sox this season. He has spent most of his seven seasons in Toronto at shortstop, but MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reports that he has told clubs he is willing to move to second base in 2026.

McDaniel projected Bichette's next deal at five years and $150 million, while Britton pegged the deal at eight years and $212 million.

Where Bichette ends up could ultimately impact the urgency of the pursuit for Bregman, and vice versa, as both the Red Sox and Blue Jays look to add some power to their batting lineup for 2026.
