Most Expensive Shohei Ohtani Card Ever Sells for Record $3M at Auction
Shohei Ohtani is the face of Major League Baseball, and the trading card market has noticed.
A 2025 Topps Chrome MVP Award Gold MLB Logoman patch Ohtani card sold for $3 million with a buyer's premium through Fanatics Collect on Thursday, making it the most expensive card featuring the Los Angeles Dodgers star that has ever been sold.
Stephen Douglas of Sports Illustrated noted the previous record was a card that sold for $1,067,000 through Heritage Auctions.
The record-setting card featured a game-used Gold MLB Logoman Patch from the Dodgers' 15-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on April 29 of this past season.
According to Fanatics Collect, "2025 Topps Chrome Baseball introduced special Gold MLB Batter Logo patches worn by MLB's 2024 MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year award winners. No other players got these patches," which celebrated his incredible 2024 season.
Ohtani won his first World Series and third MVP while joining the 50 homer/50 stolen bases club during that 2024 campaign, which was his first with the Dodgers.
"When it comes to history represented through baseball cards, there has, arguably, been none more important than this Gold Logoman Autograph Shohei Ohtani," Fanatics Collect explained. "Symbolic of his one-of-a-kind season is this 1/1 card. It's the only single-signed Gold MLB Batter Logo Patch card the Japanese superstar has in the product."
Los Angeles handled the Marlins with ease during the game in which Ohtani wore the patch, as he wasted no time making an impact.
In fact, he led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run, which was his seventh of the season. He also scored two runs and stole a base, underscoring his ability to impact the game in a number of ways.
Ohtani continued his impressive pace throughout the 2025 campaign and finished it as a back-to-back World Series champion and four-time MVP. He slashed .282/.392/.622 with 55 home runs, 102 RBI and 20 stolen bases.
That was just as a hitter, as he also posted a 2.87 ERA in 14 starts on the mound as a pitcher.
As long as Ohtani continues to dominate on the field, his cards will generate even more interest and demand.
And that means this record may eventually be broken as his career continues.
