Prior to the match, Cena walked around the ringside area and embraced several of the current and former wrestlers who were in attendance, including Owens, Sami Zayn, Kurt Angle, Rob Van Dam, Trish Stratus and TNA star Elijah, who previously wrestled in WWE as Elias.
Many of the Superstars who were ringside for Cena's retirement match were central figures in Cena's career, and that is undoubtedly true of Owens.
When Owens got called up from NXT to the main roster in 2015, he immediately entered into a rivalry with Cena, leading to a memorable series of matches between them at Elimination Chamber, Money in the Bank and Battleground.
That feud helped elevated Owens, eventually leading to him becoming universal champion and a multi-time intercontinental and United States champ.
Owens has been out of action since March due to a neck injury that required surgery. That left Owens' in-ring future in doubt, but fans and wrestlers alike are undoubtedly hopeful he will be able to return in the not-too-distant future.
Any returns Cena makes to WWE will be in a non-wrestling capacity, however, as he made it clear on several occasions that Saturday Night's Main Event would be the location of his final match.
Gunther beat Cena by submission, forcing him to tap out for the first time in more than 20 years.
While it wasn't the storybook ending some of Cena's fans may have been hoping for, it helped cement Gunther as a top heel, as he was on the receiving end of some enormous heat from the live crowd at Monday Night Raw in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
