Carlos Alcaraz Confirms Split With Coach After 6 Grand Slam Titles, 'So Many Memories'

Mike ChiariDec 17, 2025

World No. 1 tennis star Carlos Alcaraz announced Wednesday that he is parting ways with longtime coach Juan Carlos Ferrero.

In an Instagram post translated from Spanish into English by Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic, Alcaraz wrote, "We have made it to the top, and I feel that if our sporting paths had to part, it should be from up there. So many memories come to mind that it wouldn't be fair to choose just one. You have made me grow as an athlete, but above all as a person. And something I value greatly: I have enjoyed the process. I will remember that, the journey we have taken together. Now times of change are coming for both of us, new adventures and new projects. But I am certain that we will face them in the right way, giving our best, as we have always done. Always adding value."

Ferrero also released a statement on the surprising move, writing, "Today is a difficult day. One of those when it's hard to find the right words."

Ferrero had been Alcaraz's coach since 2019, presiding over all six of the Grand Slam singles titles the 22-year-old Spaniard has won.

Alcaraz has racked up all six of his Grand Slam titles since 2022, winning the French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open two times each. That includes taking the French Open and U.S. Open crowns this year.

He also reached the Wimbledon final this year, meaning Alcaraz has made five finals over his past seven Grand Slam tournaments, establishing him as the dominant player on men's tennis, along with world No. 2 Jannik Sinner.

Per Eccleshare, one of Alcaraz's representatives declined to comment on why Alcaraz and Ferrero parted ways, and what Alcaraz's coaching plans are moving forward.

However, Eccleshare noted that there appeared to be some tension between Alcaraz and Ferrero in the Netflix docuseries Carlos Alcaraz: My Way, which was released in April and followed Alcaraz during the 2024 season.

At one point during the series, there was a disagreement between Alcaraz, Ferrero and Alcaraz's agent about Alcaraz's busy schedule.

Whatever Alcaraz and Ferrero did, it worked more often than not, as Alcaraz went from a player with a ton of promise when he joined Ferrero's tennis academy in 2018 to the best tennis player in the world.

Ferrero, 45, is one of the all-time great Spanish tennis players in his own right, as he spent time as the world No. 1, won the 2003 French Open and reached the 2003 U.S. Open final.

While Alcaraz's on-court accomplishments have already surpassed Ferrero's, it is fair to wonder if he would have gotten to this point so quickly without Ferrero's guidance.
