Rockies Open to Exploring Gonzalez Trade at Later Date
Friday, July 31
Jayson Stark of ESPN reported the Rockies are telling teams they'll explore moving Gonzalez again next month or next winter.
On July 29, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reported the chances of Gonzalez being moved as "30-70" due to the quality of offers the Rockies have received.
Gonzalez struggled out of the gates this season, with just four home runs over the first two months, but has heated up recently.
The combination of Gonzalez and Tulowitzki never produced the type of success the Rockies were banking on. They have made the playoffs just once since the duo came together in 2009 and currently sit in the NL West basement.
Both players have dealt with numerous injury problems in recent years, which had a large impact on that lack of success. Gonzalez played in fewer than 135 games three times in the past five years, but he has missed just seven games so far this season.
Colorado received Jose Reyes and a trio of pitching prospects in the reported Tulowitzki deal, per MLB.com. It will probably seek a similar package for Gonzalez now that he's proved his value with a monster month and is under contract through 2017, according to Spotrac.
Gonzalez is capable of shifting the balance of power in the playoff race if he continues to perform at an elite level down the stretch. He's flashed top-end ability throughout his career, most notably when he posted a .336 average with 34 homers in 2010.
