Red Sox, Mets Trolled by MLB Fans After Pete Alonso's $155M Orioles Contract in FA
After star first baseman Pete Alonso signed with the Baltimore Orioles in free agency on a five-year, $155 million contract, his other suitors will be forced to pivot.
The New York Mets were known to be interested in retaining Alonso, and the Boston Red Sox were vying for his services as well.
Following the news of Alonso's agreement with the Orioles, fans on social media couldn't help but throw some shade at the Mets and Red Sox for their failed pursuits.

The deal with the Orioles gives Alonso the long-term contract that he failed to get when he was a free agent last offseason. He returned to the Mets on a two-year deal that paid him $30 million in 2025, and he declined the $24 million player option for the 2026 season to test the open market once again.
It was expected that Alonso would cash in with a major payday following his impressive production in 2025. He earned his fifth career All-Star selection while hitting .272 with 38 home runs and 126 RBI, ranking second in the majors in the latter category.
Alonso's strong year made him one of the most coveted hitters on the free-agent market this year. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported that the Mets, Red Sox and Orioles were considered the "favorites" to land him, but also reported that "the sticking point between the Mets and Alonso could very well be years, as sources say that the Mets may be hesitant to go more than three years with the first baseman."
New York's hesitation opened the door for Baltimore to swoop in and steal Alonso away with a massive deal. The five-time All-Star will now focus his attention on helping the Orioles bounce back from their disappointing 75-87 finish to the 2025 season.
