Per MLB.com, the Chicago White Sox had the best odds to win the lottery at 27.73 percent. The White Sox improved after the 2024 campaign, but still finished with a 60-102 record, the second worst in baseball, in 2025.

The Minnesota Twins had the second-best odds (22.18 percent), followed by the Pittsburgh Pirates (16.81).

The Colorado Rockies finished with the worst record in baseball (43-119), but were not eligible for the lottery since they received lottery picks in each of the last two drafts.

The Los Angeles Angels and Washington Nationals were also ineligible because they are "payor clubs." Payor clubs give revenue dollars rather than sharing them, and they are not allowed to receive back-to-back lottery picks.

With the draft order set, the question now becomes who will be the first player off the board in July.

UCLA standout shortstop Roch Cholowsky is widely considered to be the top prospect in this year's draft, including by Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter. Last year, Cholowsky hit .353/.480/.710 with 19 doubles, 23 home runs and 74 RBI in 66 games, and was also solid on defense.

It's a shortstop-heavy draft pool, with all four of Reuter's top prospects playing that position. Behind Cholowsky sit Grady Emerson (Fort Worth Christian School), Justin Lebron (Alabama) and Jacob Lombard (Gulliver Prep).

If the White Sox decide to take a pitcher, Florida's Liam Peterson could be their guy. He collected a 4.28 ERA with 96 strikeouts in 69.1 innings for the Gators in 2025 and four strong pitches in his arsenal, including an upper-90s fastball.

Coastal Carolina's Cameron Flukey could be another option on the mound. As a sophomore, he logged a 3.19 ERA with 118 strikeouts in 101.2 innings.

No matter who Chicago takes first overall, it is hoping to find a franchise-altering player. Since winning the AL Central in 2021, the Sox have missed the postseason four consecutive times. They had a historically bad season in 2024 and improved some last year, but are still far from being contenders.

Whoever the White Sox select might not make an immediate impact, but could one day play a role in the team's resurgence.
