Amanda Nunes vs. Kayla Harrison Title Fight Reportedly Eyed for Future UFC Main Event

A title fight between Amanda Nunes and Kayla Harrison could be coming to a future UFC main event.

UFC insider Ariel Helwani reported on his podcast Monday that the two could square off for the UFC Women's Bantamweight title as the main event for an upcoming UFC card.

"What I'm hearing the plan is, front runner, Kayla versus Amanda," Helwani said.

Helwani referred to a January pay-per-view, which would be UFC 324 in Las Vegas, where the only current scheduled fight is between Nikita Krylov and Modestas Bukauskas.

Nunes won the bantamweight title in July of 2016 and successfully defended it five times before losing it in 2021 when Julianna Peña defeated her at UFC 269. She reclaimed the title from Peña the following year and defended it at UFC 289 in 2023 with a win over Irene Aldana.

The fight against Aldana was Nunes' most recent, as she announced her retirement after the bout.

In June, Nunes revealed that she planned to come out of retirement and was looking to fight the winner of the bout between Harrison and Peña. Harrison won that fight in June, setting up a potential meeting with Nunes.

Harrison, 35, spent the first half of her career competing in judo. She won a pair of Olympic gold medals in 2012 and 2016 before making her MMA debut in 2018. After finding success early on in the sport, she made her UFC debut in 2024 with a win over Holly Holm at UFC 300.

After beating Ketlen Vieira at UFC 307 last October, she won the bantamweight championship against Peña in what was her biggest win to date.

Now, Harrison could have the chance to prove herself even further if she gets the chance to defend her title against a Hall of Famer like Nunes.
