Why Did Mets Trade Brandon Nimmo for Marcus Semien? Stearns Explains Blockbuster

Doric SamNov 24, 2025

The New York Mets made the first major move of the offseason on Sunday when they made a deal with the Texas Rangers, sending them outfielder Brandon Nimmo in exchange for second baseman Marcus Semien.

On Monday, Mets president David Stearns explained the thought process behind the trade, telling reporters that the decision was made due to "a recognition that what we did last year wasn't good enough, and running back the exact same group wasn't the right thing to do."

Nimmo was a homegrown favorite whose tenure with the Mets began when the team selected him with the No. 13 pick in the 2011 MLB draft. He set new career highs in 2025 with 25 home runs and 92 RBI. ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the 32-year-old waived his no-trade clause to allow the deal to be finalized.

Semien is a three-time All-Star and was a part of the Rangers' 2023 World Series win, but he's coming off a down year in which he was limited to 127 games after fouling a pitch off of his foot on Aug. 20 and missing the final five-plus weeks of the season. The 35-year-old hit .230 with 15 home runs and 62 RBI before the injury.

Despite Semien's down year at the plate, Stearns expressed confidence that his impact on the roster will go far beyond what he can do with his bat.

"I think there's still some underlying aspects of what he does that are encouraging for us offensively," Stearns told reporters. "I also think it's notable that this is a player that can contribute to winning baseball in a variety of different ways, and the bat may not actually lead the way at this point in his career."

The Mets are hoping to contend for a World Series title in 2026 after disappointingly missing the playoffs this season, and Stearns is banking on the acquisition of Semien being a step in that direction.
