What Does It Mean for Tarik Skubal's Future as Tigers Reportedly Eye Pitchers in FA?

The Detroit Tigers are "targeting pitching depth early in free agency," according to ESPN's Kiley McDaniel.

This comes as two-time reigning American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal is the source of frequent rumors and speculation.

McDaniel entertained all of the possibilities when it comes to Skubal's future and the Tigers' pursuit of more pitching.

"You can see what you want to see when it comes to the Rorschach test that is the team-building conundrum of the winter," he wrote.

MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reported that "very few within the game expect the Tigers to trade their ace this winter."

Buster Olney of ESPN cited an MLB team executive who's skeptical and speculated the Tigers could still get a king's ransom if they waited to deal Skubal closer to the trade deadline.

One obvious conclusion to draw from McDaniel's is that Detroit wants to proactively bolster the starting rotation in preparation for losing its ace.

Replacing Skubal with another pitcher of similar quality is impossible. Over the past two years, he has maintained a 2.30 ERA and struck out 469 batters over 387.1 innings.

Much like how the New York Yankees tried to replace Juan Soto's value in the aggregate last winter, Detroit's front office may believe better depth across the staff can make up for Skubal's individual brilliance.

The Tigers could instead be going in the complete opposite direction.

Keeping Skubal on the roster through 2026 and allowing him to hit free agency would mean turning down the opportunity get significant assets through a trade right now.

However, a third straight trip to the playoffs would mean more revenue and a more engaged fanbase.

Flags fly forever, as the cliche goes. If the Tigers won an American League pennant or a World Series title with Skubal on the roster, nobody would say they made a mistake in not trading him.
