Edwin Diaz Reveals Odds of Mets Return in MLB Free Agency amid Contract Rumors

Zach BacharNov 13, 2025

Star closer Edwin Díaz weighed in on his chances of returning to the New York Mets in free agency.

Díaz said Thursday that his odds of signing with the Mets are "50-50," according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

The 31-year-old played for New York from 2019-25, but opted out of the final two years and $37 million remaining on his deal on Nov. 3.

Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic reported Wednesday that Díaz is searching for a new contract that is "essentially the same one" as the five-year, $102 million deal he signed with the Mets in 2022.

The veteran wrapped up a strong 2025 season in New York, racking up 28 saves across 62 games while compiling a 1.63 ERA and 0.874 WHIP. He recorded 98 strikeouts and 21 walks in 66.1 innings of work, receiving an All-Star nod for the third time in his career.

Díaz posted a 5.59 ERA during his first season with the Mets in 2019 but steadily grew more comfortable throughout his time as a member of the organization, boasting a 2.27 ERA from 2020-22.

He was forced to miss the 2023 season due to a right knee injury and was unable pick up where he left off after making his return in 2024, but his strong 2025 campaign should result in plenty of interest in free agency.

A reunion with the Mets appears to be a possibility as well.
