Baker Mayfield Explains Why He Wants Bucs to 'Get Pissed Off' After Loss to Patriots

Andrew PetersNov 9, 2025

After losing two of their last three games, Baker Mayfield is hoping the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be fired up heading into the rest of the season.

Mayfield said he wants the Bucs to "get pissed off" following their 28-23 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday.

"I'm hoping our guys do get pissed off about this," he told reporters. "This isn't the end of our season. I know that. We have a very important game ahead of us. Games like this, when you don't win them — it should sting. It should really, really hurt."

The Bucs looked like one of the best teams in the NFL through the first six weeks of the season after starting the year 5-1, but they've had some flaws exposed over the last few games.

Three weeks ago, Tampa Bay's offense went stagnant in a 24-9 loss to the Detroit Lions. This week, their defense came up short. Patriots quarterback Drake Maye threw for 270 yards and a pair of touchdowns to become the new MVP favorite.

The Patriots were even better on the ground as rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 10.5 yards per carry. It was the first time this year Henderson had collected more than 100 yards in a game.

Tampa Bay's defense allowed four 50-plus yard plays in the loss.

"Obviously, we didn't play it well enough," head coach Todd Bowles told reporters. "We definitely didn't coach it well enough. I definitely didn't coach it well enough, and it starts with me. Those things can't happen if you're playing against a good team."

The Bucs have Super Bowl aspirations, but allowing explosive plays like they did on Sunday won't cut it.

But as Mayfield said, the season is far from over, and they have plenty of time to correct their mistakes. Next week, they'll get the perfect opportunity to turn things around and build some confidence as they face the Buffalo Bills on the road.
