Donald Trump Reportedly Wants Commanders to Name New Stadium After Him

Mike ChiariNov 8, 2025

United States President Donald Trump reportedly wants the Washington Commanders to name their new stadium after him.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter and Don Van Natta Jr., a senior White House source said Commanders owner Josh Harris has been informed of Trump's desire for the stadium to bear his name.

In September, the Columbia Council voted in favor of the stadium project, which is slated to cost $3.7 billion. The Commanders will pay $2.7 billion of it and are responsible for any potential overages.

The stadium will be built at the site of RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., which was home to the Commanders from 1961 to 1996, which was a time period that saw them win three Super Bowl titles.

Construction is expected to begin on the stadium next year before concluding in 2030.

Trump is scheduled to be in attendance for Sunday's game between the Commanders and Detroit Lions at the Commanders' current home, which is Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland.

While a source told Schefter and Van Natta that Trump attending the game as a guest of Harris could lead to conversations about the name of the new stadium, no formal talks have taken place yet.

Regarding the new stadium potentially bearing Trump's name, a senior White House source told Schefter and Van Natta, "It's what the president wants, and it will probably happen."

A source also indicated to Schefter and Van Natta that the Commanders do not have full autonomy when it comes to the stadium's naming rights.

The source said, "The team doesn't have the authority. They can't name the stadium ... on their own. The city would be involved in that decision, and the Park Service would be involved."

Most NFL teams' stadiums are named after a corporate sponsor, which provides a steady and significant revenue stream.

Trump could conceivably pay for the Commanders' new stadium to be named after him, but a source told Schefter and Van Natta that Trump wants the stadium to bear his name "as a tribute or thank you for his work to get it approved."

The 79-year-old Trump is one year into his second term as president, and he will be out of office by the time the Commanders' new stadium opens in 2030.
