Frisco Police said in a statement that Kneeland died from an "apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound following an outside agency vehicle pursuit that led to a multi-agency search in Frisco."

Kneeland was 24.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of Cowboys' Marshawn Kneeland," the NFL said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend Catalina, family, friends and his teammates. We have been in contact with the Cowboys and have offered support and counseling resources."

"It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning. Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization," the Cowboys added in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family."

Kneeland's agent, Jon Perzley, and family also released statements:

A number of Kneeland's teammates, former teammates and former NFL players reacted to the news and shared their memories of him.

"I'm sorry lil brother," Green Bay Packers star Micah Parsons, who played with Kneeland in Dallas, wrote on Instagram. "I hope you find peace."

Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle, another former teammate, told reporters Kneeland was a "great person, you know? Guy just smiling all the time, and he's a great teammate. Just a tough time. ... Young kid, very spirited and like I said, just keep him and his family in prayers."

And Panthers safety Israel Mukuamu, who played for the Cowboys last season, said he "would have never thought in a million years—Marshawn, a good, positive guy, always had a smile on his face. Was always joking around. Just to see that, it hurts. I had to turn off social media because it was all over social medi
