Doric SamNov 6, 2025

Thursday's news that the San Diego Padres hired Craig Stammen as their next manager was broken by an unexpected source.

Kentucky Sports Radio host Matt Jones took to social media to reveal Stammen's hiring after receiving a text from a "random person."

Jones followed up by admitting that reporting on the Padres is beyond his depth, but he turned out to be right.

The Padres announced on Thursday that Stammen has been hired as their new manager on a three-year contract. The 41-year-old was a longtime relief pitcher for the Padres and Washington Nationals and most recently served as a special assistant to San Diego general manager A.J. Preller after his playing career.

ESPN's Jeff Passan stated that the Padres hiring Stammen "tops the list" of the surprising managerial hires this offseason.
