Dodgers Owner Magic Johnson Says Blue Jays 'Probably Would Have Beat Any Other Team'

Joseph ZuckerNov 2, 2025

Basketball legend Magic Johnson isn't sure whether anybody but the Los Angeles Dodgers could've denied the Toronto Blue Jays a title in 2025.

"So let me just say this: Don't forget to give Toronto some love," said Johnson, who's a minority stakeholder in the Dodgers, to The Athletic's Jayson Stark. "That team probably would have beat any other team, right? And they gave the world a Series that nobody's going to forget forever."

Toronto generally wasn't considered a superteam or one that stood head and shoulders above the rest of MLB. Still, the franchise assembled an impressive resume across the entire year.

The Jays tied for the American League's best record and claimed an AL East title over the New York Yankees via tiebreaker. They proceeded to eliminate the Yankees in four games in the AL Division Series and outlasted the AL West champion Seattle Mariners in the Championship Series.

Toronto then pushed the defending World Series winner to the brink in Game 7, leading into the ninth inning before Miguel Rojas' game-tying home run. Will Smith hit a solo homer in the 11th to break the hearts of Canadians everywhere.

Johnson's comments and similar praise from others will be a cold comfort to Blue Jays players and fans. Maybe the team would've faired better against a different opponent, but that doesn't change the outcome of the Fall Classic.
