Mookie Betts Says He's 'Been Terrible' in World Series, Dave Roberts Talks Struggles

Zach BacharOct 30, 2025

Los Angeles Dodgers star shortstop Mookie Betts took responsibility for his inconsistent play during the 2025 World Series.

"I've just been terrible," Betts told reporters after the Dodgers suffered a 6-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 5. "I've been terrible. I wish it was from lack of effort, I really do. But it's not, so I don't have any answers."

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed that Betts isn't dealing with an injury that's affecting his performances, telling the media the 33-year-old is "physically fine" and will start Game 6.

"I think you can see there's a little anxiousness in there," Roberts added.

While Los Angeles now trails the series 3-2 with Wednesday night's defeat, Roberts was confident heading into an elimination game.

"There's a fight in there," Roberts said in his press conference. "There's more in there, we've won two games in a row. It comes down to one game."

A resurgent performance from Betts would help the Dodgers force Game 7, as he's been largely ineffective in the series so far.

After going 3-for-19 in the first four contests against Toronto, the eight-time All-Star went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Game 5.

Betts, who has earned six Gold Glove honors in his career, was also charged with an error in Game 3. He threw wide after fielding a ground ball in the third inning of Wednesday's contest as well, failing to turn an inning-ending double play and running up starter Blake Snell's pitch count.

The slump from Betts is particularly surprising considering he looked sharp throughout the start of the Dodgers' 2025 postseason run, hitting .293 with an .809 OPS in 10 playoff games prior to the World Series.

Game 6 between Los Angeles and Toronto is on Friday at 8 p.m. ET.
