Vikings' Carson Wentz Reportedly Out for Season, Will Get Surgery on Shoulder Injury

Scott PolacekOct 27, 2025

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz is reportedly done for the season.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Monday that Wentz is scheduled to undergo left-shoulder surgery and will be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign. He was in clear pain during Thursday's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers and eventually exited the game.

Minnesota announced it placed him on injured reserve and claimed tight end Ben Sims from waivers.

The team's announcement revealed Wentz first suffered the injury to his non-throwing shoulder that left him "enduring considerable pain" during the Vikings' Week 5 victory over the Cleveland Browns in London. He rehabbed during a Week 6 bye, played in the Week 7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and took the field four days later against the Chargers.

While Wentz threw two interceptions against his former team, he also threw for 315 yards against the Eagles.

In all, he completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 1,216 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions in five games while playing in relief of the injured J.J. McCarthy.

Minnesota made McCarthy the franchise quarterback when it selected him with the No. 10 overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft, but he missed his entire rookie campaign with injury. He then started the first two contests of the 2025 campaign before he was sidelined by an ankle injury.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday before the Wentz news that McCarthy was "expected" to return for the upcoming divisional contest against the Detroit Lions on Sunday. The timing is ideal given Wentz's setback and will give Minnesota an opportunity to once again evaluate McCarthy as the potential long-term starter moving forward.

The Michigan product completed 58.5 percent of his passes for 301 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in the first two games this season.

Undrafted rookie Max Brosmer is next on the depth chart behind McCarthy.
