The Dodgers had bases loaded with one out in the top of the fourth inning when Max Muncy hit a towering fly ball to center field. Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick leaped to catch the ball, but it bounced off the wall and back into his glove.
Hernández thought Frelick caught the ball for an out and ran back to tag up before taking off for home. Meanwhile, Frelick quickly got the ball back into play to shortstop Joey Ortiz, who threw home to catcher William Contreras for the force play. Contreras caught the ball just before Hernández slid in for the out.
He then ran to third base himself for the force. Catcher Will Smith, who was on second base, ran back to the bag thinking Frelick caught the ball.
Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times provided more observations on the matter.
In the end, it was much ado about nothing because of Dodgers starting pitcher Blake Snell, who threw eight shutout, one-hit innings while striking out 10. Freddie Freeman hit a solo homer in the sixth before Mookie Betts drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth for a 2-0 lead.
The Brewers nearly came back in the ninth. Jackson Chourio hit a sacrifice fly to cut the lead in half before Milwaukee loaded the bases with two out, but closer Blake Treinen struck out Brice Turang to end the matchup.
Game 2 of the best-of-seven series takes place on Tuesday at 8:08 p.m. ET in Milwaukee.
