Bill Belichick, Mike McCarthy and Top Options as Titans HC for Future of Cam Ward

Andrew PetersOct 13, 2025

The Tennessee Titans are searching for their next head coach after firing Brian Callahan on Monday.

Tennessee parted ways with its second year head coach after a 1-5 start to the season. The Titans fell to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

Now, the Titans are looking for their third head coach in four years. Here are a couple of names that could be heading to Nashville soon.

Bill Belichick, HC, North Carolina

Bill Belichick's first season coaching college football could not be going much worse as the legendary former New England Patriots coach is off to a 2-3 start with losses to TCU, UCF and Clemson.

There have already been rumblings about Belichick possibly asking for a contract buyout, though he denied those rumors on Monday.

That being said, if Belichick were to get NFL interest, it's hard to imagine he wouldn't at least entertain it. He was hoping to stay in the NFL after his Patriots exit, but no team was interested in him at the time.

Hiring Belichick is a high-risk, high-reward scenario. At his best, Belichick is one of the best coaches in NFL history, but it's hard to say whether the 73-year-old is still capable of coaching at a high level given his struggles with the Tar Heels.

Mike McCarthy, Former HC, Dallas Cowboys

Though Mike McCarthy isn't quite as exciting as some of the young, up-and-coming names on the list, he's a proven winner with decades of experience, and that might be exactly what the Titans need at this point.

McCarthy was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 2006 to 2018, during which he compiled a 125-77-2 record, including a Super Bowl victory. He also helped develop quarterback Aaron Rodgers into becoming one of the best players of his generation.

Tennessee just drafted Cam Ward first overall and is hoping he will be the player who turns the franchise around. Having McCarthy in the building could be perfect for the young talent.

Kliff Kingsbury, OC, Washington Commanders

Kliff Kingsbury's first stint in the NFL wasn't great as he led the Arizona Cardinals to the playoffs just one time in four seasons, but he's looking more ready to lead a team after early success with the Washington Commanders.

In his first season as the Commanders' offensive coordinator last year, Kingsbury helped lead Washington to a 12-5 record and its first NFC Championship appearance since 1991.

He also helped quarterback Jayden Daniels have one of the best rookie seasons in recent memory as the No. 2 overall pick won Offensive Rookie of the Year. Considering the Titans' quarterback situation, Kingsbury's success with Daniels should lead to some interest from Tennessee.

Matt Nagy, OC, Kansas City Chiefs

Much like Kingsbury, Matt Nagy's first head coaching stint with the Chicago Bears some some success, but mostly struggles. But the 47-year-old has spent the last few years learning from Andy Reid with the Kansas City Chiefs and could be ready to take on a head coaching job once again.

With the Chiefs, Nagy has won a pair of Super Bowls, first as a quarterbacks coach to Patrick Mahomes in 2022 and then as the offensive coordinator, a role he took on in 2023.

It's also worth noting that Nagy has a connection to Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi, who was the assistant general manager of the Chiefs from 2021 to 2024.
