Michael Irvin Defends Deion Sanders, His Era from Podcaster's Diss, 'Get the F--k Out'

Joseph ZuckerOct 9, 2025

Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin took umbrage with a subtle dig questioning his ability relative to the current wideouts in the NFL.

A clip from the Facts over Feelings podcast, which was originally posted in August, made its way to Irvin. The hosts discuss legendary cornerback Deion Sanders and posit receivers are faster and more athletic now. They then dismissively cite "the receivers from back then" as photos of Irvin and Jerry Rice pop up.

The hosts called Sanders an "alien or somebody from the future that was dropped off in the wrong time," the idea being that Prime was a supreme athlete being tested against weaker competition compared to 2025.

"Are you s-tting me?" Irvin responded at the 2:04 mark of a video he posted Wednesday. "We are the two most accomplished receivers in the history of this game when you're talking about the most important thing is championships. And your stupid a-- talking about running fast, like people weren't running fast back then. Are you s--tting me?"

Fans try to compare eras across every sport, and the conversations are almost always the same. In particular, there's one side of the argument that says the legends of yesteryear couldn't stack up with the stars of today.

Within the context of the NFL, the same considerations apply.

It's true that football players now are generally bigger and faster than their counterparts from decades ago. If you were to give Irvin and Rice all of the knowledge we now have about nutrition and training — on top of years' worth of specialized workouts — then they probably could've shaved a few hundredths of a second from their 40 times.

More than that, the rule changes intended to make the NFL safer render the game almost recognizable from what fans watched in the 1980s and '90s. Irvin and Rice would've been afforded a lot more space with less fear of getting hammered by a defender as they're hauling in a pass.

Dismissing Rice's body of work is especially laughable. He had 1,500-plus receiving yards across four different seasons. Imagine what he could've done in a more pass-happy NFL.
