Packers Reportedly More Interested in Romeo Doubs Contract Extension Than Trade

Zach BacharOct 1, 2025

The Green Bay Packers appear to be more focused on extending the contract of wide receiver Romeo Doubs instead of potentially trading him, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

"The trade rumors surrounding Doubs, who has four touchdowns through four games, never made much sense," Fowler reported Wednesday. "That conversation was understandable last season, when the team suspended Doubs for one game for missing practices for personal reasons. But the Packers have shown no interest in trading him, and my sense is they have more interest in potentially extending him."

Doubs is playing on the final year of his rookie contract, carrying a cap hit of $3.6 million for the 2025 season before he's set to hit free agency in 2026.

The 25-year-old and the Packers have held "cursory talks" regarding a new contract and there's a "possibility" that he remains with the team heading into the 2026 season, per Fowler.

Doubs has started his 2025 campaign on a high note, hauling in 13 receptions for 179 yards and four touchdowns through four appearances. This included a trio of touchdown catches during Green Bay's 40-40 tie with the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

Doubs has established himself as a consistent option for Jordan Love to begin the year, posting a 137.9 passer rating when targeted (via Pro Football Reference).

If he continues on his current trajectory, it's understandable that the Packers want to retain him beyond the end of the year.

Still, Green Bay has already invested resources into its receiving corps.

The Packers drafted Matthew Golden and Savion Williams with first and third-round picks in the 2025 NFL draft, respectively. Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks are both under contract in 2026, while Green Bay also handed Christian Watson a one-year extension worth $13.25 million on Sept. 9.

Doubs' track record could also complicate extension talks, as he never reached 700 receiving yards in a season heading into 2025. He wrapped up a 2024 campaign in which he reeled in 46 catches for 601 yards and four touchdowns in 13 games, missing time due to multiple concussions.

Despite Doubs' uncertain long-term future in Green Bay, he could find himself back with the team next season if he continues to perform at a high level in 2025.
