Buster Posey Doesn't Expect to Pursue Bruce Bochy as Giants Manager After Melvin Exit

Julia StumbaughOct 1, 2025

San Francisco Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey said Wednesday he isn't planning on pursuing Bruce Bochy as a managerial candidate next season.

Bochy, who served as manager of the Giants for the majority of Posey's playing career, parted ways with the Texas Rangers after the 2025 season.

The Giants are meanwhile seeking a new manager following Bob Melvin's dismissal after two seasons.

"I talked to Boch a couple of days ago, and just told him that where we are currentlyโ€” and I don't even know what Boch's plans are, if he wants to continue or manage or notโ€” The door is always open here for some sort of role, but the way I think that things are coming into picture in my mind with where we want to go next, I don't see us going that route with Boch," Posey said Wednesday (h/t NBC Sports).

Posey said after Melvin's firing on Monday that the Giants are "looking to find a different voice that can take us in a different direction."

When asked about the possibility of hiring Bochy on Monday, Posey answered, "I haven't heard, so I can't speak to that."

Posey also said Monday he saw age as "somewhat irrelevant" to his hiring process, but declined to give reporters any names of candidates he was considering.

Bochy led Posey and the Giants to a 1052-1054 record and three World Series championships over 13 seasons before announcing his retirement after the 2019 season.

He then came out of retirement to join the Rangers ahead of the 2023 season. Bochy led the Rangers to the franchise's first World Series win in his first season with the team, then served as manager for two more seasons.

The Rangers announced Monday that Bochy, who turned 70 in April, had "mutually" agreed with the club to step down as manager after an 81-81 finish to the 2025 season.

When contact by the San Francisco Standard's John Shea after the news, Bochy said he was "sorting everything out."

About the Giants, Bochy told Shea that he "would always have a conversation with Buster."

It is not yet clear if Bochy plans to pursue another managerial role outside of Texas. It sounds like he could alternatively pursue an advisory role with either the Giants or the Rangers, who MLB.com's Kennedi Landry reported have also offered him a front office position.

Bochy currently ranks sixth on MLB's all-time list of winningest managers, with a career 2,252-2,266 record over 28 seasons with the San Diego Padres, Giants and Rangers.
