Albert Pujols Reportedly Will Interview for Angels Manager Job to Replace Washington

Future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols may be returning to the sport in a major role soon enough.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Pujols will interview for the Los Angeles Angels managerial position after Ron Washington's contract option for the 2025 season wasn't exercised.

Per Sam Blum, Katie Woo, and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Pujols is "believed to be the leading choice for the job for Angels owner Arte Moreno."

Pujols, 45, was a three-time MVP, 11-time All-Star, two-time champion, two-time Gold Glover and one-time batting champion during his playing days, finishing his 22-year career with 703 home runs (fourth most in MLB history), 2,218 RBI (second all time), a .296 batting average and a .918 OPS. He's as obvious a first-ballot Hall of Famer as there ever was.

He spent 10 seasons with the Angels, so his potential return as a manager would likely be popular with fans. And he's already managing Leones del Esogido in the Dominican Winter League and has been chosen as the Dominican Republic's manager for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, so the transition to a managerial career is already in the works.

"Yeah. I think why not," Pujols told reporters in March when asked if he'd like to eventually be an MLB manager. "I think if the opportunity is right one day, I think I'll be ready for that."

As for the Angels, the team hasn't had a winning season since 2015 and hasn't reached the playoffs since 2014. That lengthy spell of mediocrity likely cost them Shohei Ohtani, who chose to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers ahead of the 2024 season on a 10-year, $700 million deal rather than return to the Angels.

The club failed to capitalize on the prime years of Trout and Ohtani, who won five MVP awards for the Angels in a 10-year period. Now, the team is clearly in a rebuilding phase, and it appears Pujols is a prime candidate to lead that effort.
