NFL Scouts Rip Bryce Young amid Panthers' Struggles, 'I Don't Think He's the Guy'
Bryce Young looked like he turned a corner toward the end of the 2024 season but has seemed to regress to open the 2025 campaign, throwing for 753 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions as the Carolina Panthers have limped to a 1-3 start.
Three of those touchdowns came in one game, and folks within the NFL are questioning Young's long-term potential yet again.
"I don't think he's the guy," an NFL evaluator told The Athletic's Jeff Howe.
As Howe wrote, Young has been "downright 'awful' at some points during the Panthers' 1-3 start, according to one evaluator who was granted anonymity so he could speak openly about another team's player. He's looked uncomfortable in the pocket, struggled to see the field, lacked anticipation and failed to be consistently accurate."
Young has completed just 60.4 percent of his passes this season and taken six sacks, and the Panthers ranks 21st in passing yards (189 YPG) and 26th in scoring (18.8 PPG) this season.
For now, however, there are no plans to bench Young like the team did last year.
"Absolutely," head coach Dave Canales told reporters when asked if Young would be the Week 5 starter. "Counting on him to keep pushing us forward. Counting on him to keep us on track. There were some near-misses across the board, some penalties that put us in weird situations, a couple of protection issues and one of them where he slipped and kinda put us in a bad situation. But I still feel that he's being confident out there, he's leading the group, he's getting us out there with good energy and focus. So he'll continue to play."
